I’m in heaven. I’ve had the privilege to live on beautiful Lake Geneva in Wisconsin most of my life. A few years back Tim (my husband) and I purchased a boat. They say the two best days in the life of a boat owner are the day you buy the boat and the day you sell the boat. Ours sank the first day we put her in the water, so we should have seen the writing on the wall, but that’s a whole other blog post.
Our dog Bella is an eight-and-a-half year old mini Labradoodle – more poodle than doodle. She is a F1b Labradoodle. F1b is when one parent is a miniature Poodle. When breeding for a mini-doodle the sire is a miniature poodle and the dame is an F1Labradoodle (Labrador x Poodle). F1b’s are sometimes called second generation’ puppies.
Bella – or Boo, which is her nickname because she will stealthily come up behind you and scare the bejesus out of you, so hence the name Boo, one of Caspar the Friendly Ghost’s sidekicks. She’s been a wonderful Doodle, very easy to train, crazy smart and boy does she love, love, loves to swim.
Most people don’t know that Poodles are water dogs, they think it’s the Labrador in the Doodle. Poodles originated in Germany, where they were called Pudel, meaning “splash in the water,” a reference to their work as water retrievers. The exaggerated show cut seen today began as a practical way to keep the dog’s joints and torso warm in cold water.
When Bella see’s the “boat bag” she goes ballistic. Barking, tearing around the house squealing like a pig which we interpret as “come on guys, let’s get going”! By the time we get to the pier she’s in full blown water meltdown, quivering and squeaking. We’ve learned over the years to get her swim in first before we try and go anywhere on the boat which is a must for a fun day on the water for all of us.
I’ve had dogs all my life from Pugs to Boxers, but Bella, she’s my little Lassie.
